13 Reasons Why Season 2: Tying Up Loose Ends

13 Reasons Why Season 2 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we have great reason to speculate. There are still a lot of loose ends that were not resolved in the finale. The showrunners have a lot of material they can work on. The only problem I see with a second season is the title of the show – the 13 reasons have already been exposed. Perhaps they can shift the focus away from Hannah and change the title of the show?

Let me list six probable storylines for season 2.

Alex’s suicide attempt

The biggest cliffhanger in last season’s finale is whether Alex survived his suicide attempt or not. Guilty over his actions leading to Hannah’s suicide, Alex decided to end his life as well. The last scene we see of Alex is an ambulance shot, casting some doubt on Alex’s survival.

I can already see the opening moments of the second season’s premiere: the camera panning to Alex’s ambulance, to the hospital, then eventually a decision on his survival. The second season can shift the focus to Alex’s family – how the father-son dynamics change in the aftermath of Alex’s suicide attempt. That is, if he survives.

The Bakers v Liberty High

The majority of season one dealt with the Bakers preparing for the trial against Liberty High. The Bakers claimed that there was negligence on the part of the school with regards to Hannah’s bullying.

In the last episode, we saw Tony renege on his promise to Hannah by handing over the tapes to her parents. With the 13th tape in the Bakers’ possession – that is, Mr. Porter’s tape, which directly ties the administration of Liberty High to Hannah’s suicide – the Bakers now have a strong case against Liberty High. The second season can focus on the courtroom battle between the two parties.

The reaction of Lainie, the school’s attorney and Clay’s mom, would be interesting to see. Would she back out once she hears the tapes?

I expect the Bakers to win the trial. 13 Reasons Why season 2 can show how Liberty High reacts to the loss.

Justin’s future

After being abandoned by Jessica, Justin decides that he has very little to live for. At the end of the last episode, he packed his bags and ran away from his home.

It wasn’t really explained where Justin is headed to. Prior to this episode, whenever Justin needed to unwind and escape from his abusive stepfather, he would go hang out at Bryce’s place. He can’t do that now, for obvious reasons. The second season could give us an update on Justin’s whereabouts.

Justin and Jessica’s strained relationship can be one of the key storylines of season two. Will Jessica eventually accept Justin? Or did she really mean what she said in the last episode?

Bryce’s incarceration?

With the 14th tape currently in the possession of the Bakers, Bryce is in some deep water. However, we have to remember that Bryce is filthy rich. It’s possible that he finds some way to twist the facts and get away with little punishment, or worse, even scotch-free.

There are a lot of angles that season two can take for the main villain, Bryce Walker. The show could explore how Bryce tries to seek revenge against Clay Jensen. Or it could explore how Bryce eventually realizes the gravity of his actions… on second thought, he probably won’t.

Clay and Skye’s relationship

Clay and Skye have always had a complicated relationship. As ex-friends during the majority of the first season, Skye would always throw mean jabs at Clay for “changing.” During the last episode, we see Clay reaching out to Skye. The season ended with the pair, including Tony and his boyfriend, cruising along the highway and starting a new chapter in their relationship.

It’s undeniable that Clay and Skye have chemistry. It’s obvious that Skye has an admiration for Clay. Clay, on the other hand, used to have feelings for Skye. 13 Reasons Why season 2 can explore the pair’s developing feelings. The show can uncover Clay and Skye’s rich history, going back in time to middle school, and explore the time when the two were really close friends.

Tyler’s gun collection

Tyler’s gun collection is the most mysterious aspect of the last episode. During the first season, Tyler was shown being bullied by jocks and ignored by the other kids featured in the tapes. In the finale, the show tried to mislead the audience into thinking that it was Tyler who attempted to kill himself.

Why does Tyler have an assortment of guns? Is he going to seek revenge on those who wronged him in the past? Or worse, is he planning to do a mass school shooting? This controversial scenario could make its way into 13 Reasons Why season 2.
