Well, Bitcoin’s had a really exciting year. From less than $1000 a coin at the start of the year, to reaching an all-time high shy of $20,000 early December, to now ranging around $14,000, Bitcoin is clearly on a roller coaster ride.
It’s not really clear how to get started with Bitcoin when you’re from the Philippines. Coinbase still doesn’t have support in the Philippines, ditto the major crypto exchanges like GDAX and Gemini. So, what’s the easiest way to invest in the cryptocurrency when you live in the Philippines?
Why should you use Coins.ph?
1. It’s easy to use.
The Coins.ph app has two wallets: a Philippine Peso wallet and a Bitcoin wallet. Buying Bitcoin is as simple as converting your Philippine Peso to Bitcoin with a simple swipe (if you’re on the phone) or a click (if you’re on the PC).
There are two types of Bitcoin prices in the Coins app: the buy price and the sell price, which applies when you want to convert PHP to BTC or BTC to PHP, respectively. The spread between the two is 3%. It’s quite large, but Coins.ph is the easiest option at the moment if you want to invest in Bitcoin.
2. It’s convenient.
Transferring cash to your Coins.ph wallet can be done easily by going to your nearest 7-11 store or Cebuana Lhuillier pawnshop. I recommend the Cebuana option since it only charges a flat fee of 40 pesos regardless of amount while the 7-11 option charges 2% of the amount you’re putting into your Coins.ph wallet.
There’s another competitor to Coins.ph, the Abra app, but I found it a bit difficult to find a Tambunting branch which would allow to me to cash in. At the moment, Coins.ph has the larger network and is more hassle-free to use.
3. You can use it to buy load and pay bills.
Coins.ph isn’t just an app to invest in Bitcoin. You can use it to load your cellular phones and pay your bills. At the moment, Coins.ph has a running promo wherein you get a 10% rebate of load that you buy on the platform. Better make the most of it while it lasts!
